GOODNEWS -EMBER MONTHS; DO YOU REALLY KNOW ECZEMA?

There is so much confusion about what Eczema is and often time people confuse Eczema with Fungi infection. But enough of the confusion let us talk about Eczema!

Eczema is a health condition that causes the skin to become dry, cracked and itchy and irritated. The CAUSE of Eczema is UNKNOWN, but is associated mostly with people who have allergies. It may run in families especially alongside conditions such as Asthma.
Eczema maybe triggered by certain conditions and materials such as stress, extreme heat or cold, sunlight, toilet soap, detergents for washing clothes, body cream or lotion, wet grass or some weed, insect bites, some foods e.g cow milk and eggs, etc.

When you hear some families, clan or villages say we forbid this or that food or item, it is most likely because some persons have been allergic to it in the past.

Some children or adult walk through wet grass and get severe itching or irritations, that’s a sign of Eczema. Even the label on clothes can cause eczematous reactions in some children!
Eczema affects children more than adults. Atopic dertmatitis is the commonest form of Eczema. Others include; Discord, Contact, Dyshydrotic and Seborrhoeic eczema.
Although any part of the body may be affected by atopic dermititis, the most affected parts include;
  •  Scalp of the head
  • Cheeks
  • Around the neck
  • Hands including the elbows
  •  Around the knees

TREATMENT
There is NO CURE for Eczema; however the condition may improve with age and by simply avoiding the triggers treatment which is meant to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life. Treatment options include;

1. Use of Mositurizers or emollients
2. Antihistamines and corticosteriods - cream and ointments to reduce itching and swellings
3. Special bandages and wet wraps are also helpful
4. See your doctor - especially if you suspect food allergy
