Sixty-four accidents over a 48-hour period left emergency
services with their hands full in Durban over the past weekend.At least eight people died and 48 were injured in the
accidents.
In one incident this weekend, IPSS Medical Rescue
reported that the KwaDukuza Fire Department extricated three people and treated
two patients and transported them to Stanger hospital in a critical condition.
The third person died on scene.
In another accident two light motor vehicles, were
involved in a head-on collision on the R614 near Nsuze.One person was declared dead on scene while another is in
a critical condition.
This comes as MEC for Transport in KwaZulu-Natal Willies
Mchunu is set to launch the province's Integrated Festive Safety Plan on
Wednesday.
In a statement released on Monday, Mchunu said the plan
would be aimed at reducing crashes and fatalities on the province's roads
during the festive period.
“A multi-disciplinary operation to mark the start of the
intensified law enforcement activities will soon kick-off at Mooi River Toll
Plaza to help curb crashes,” said Mchunu.
He added that this year's plan would see the provincial
government working more closely with neighbouring provinces..
