Manchester Airport carried out a part evacuation of
Terminal 2 this evening after an ‘unattended bag’ was discovered outside the
building.
Passengers on the terminal’s land side were cleared
from the building and the area surrounding the bag cordoned off after it was
discovered shortly before 7pm.
Police officers and fire fighters were called to the
incident but have now been stood down after it was determined the item posed no
threat.
An airport spokesman said the area outside the
terminal had been cleared as a precaution. The building is now reopen and there
is no news of flight delays.
Superintendent Mark Kenny, from Greater Manchester
Police, said: ‘We contained the situation and dealt with the suspicious bag as
quickly as possible so there was minimal disruption to the airport and the
public.
‘I would like to thank the public for their patience
and cooperation.’
Earlier in the evening, a number of people had
reported the evacuation on Twitter, with a general sense of confusion as to
what was going on.
