Corruption and bribery are South Africa's biggest
crime problem‚ according to an index compiled by Numbeo‚ which describes itself
as the world’s largest database of user contributed data about cities and
countries.
Its crime index makes South Africa the third-most
dangerous country in the world‚ behind Venezuela and South Sudan; and
Pietermaritzburg is the second-most dangerous city in the world‚ behind San
Pedro Sula in Honduras.
Most of Africa is excluded from the index because
Numbeo has few contributors on the continent. Respondents to the survey were
asked to score the level of crime in their country and city from bad (-2) to
good (+2). The survey dealt with citizens’ levels of fear about violent crime‚
theft‚ hate crimes based on ethnicity or religion‚ and corruption and bribery.
Corruption and bribery was perceived to be the
biggest crime group in South Africa‚ followed by assault and robbery‚ and
theft. Being insulted or attacked based on race or religion was the least
worrying group.
In the top 10 most dangerous cities‚ Johannesburg is
fourth‚ Pretoria fifth and Durban sixth. Cape Town‚ ranked as the ninth most
violent city in the world (based on the number of murders per 100‚000
population) is 20th in the Numbeo index. Numbeo’s indices rely on user inputs
as well as data manually collected information from a number of authoritative
sources‚ with algorithms in place to discard statistically inaccurate data.
The group claims to have collected millions
datapoints since it was established‚ and is often used as a comparative data
source for media groups such as Forbes‚ Business Insider‚ Time‚ The Economist
and the NYT.
