George Voinovich Remembered Not as Politician, But as Man of Faith

George V. Voinovich, former Cleveland mayor, Ohio governor and U.S. Senator, was remembered at his funeral Friday as a man who sought to help others, a strong leader in his community.

During Mass at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Euclid, his distinguished political career drew some mention. But his commitment to his faith, drive to help lift up others and status as a strong role model were the focus of attention.

Voinovich, 79, was mayor of Cleveland for nearly all of the 1980s, governor for eight years beginning in 1991 and a U.S. senator from Ohio for two terms, leaving office at the end of 2010.

He died in his sleep Sunday at his home in Cleveland. He is survived by his wife, Janet, three children and several grandchildren.

While the service was geared for Voinovich's family, friends and church, there were several dignitaries in attendance.

Among them:

Attorney General Mike DeWine, who was Voinovich's lieutenant governor until he returned to Congress. He later served with Voinovich in the Senate.

Sen. Rob Portman, who succeeded Voinovich in the Senate.

Former Cleveland Mayor and Rep. Dennis Kucinich. Voinovich followed Kucinich as mayor.

Others included Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor, former Ohio House Speaker Bill Batchelder, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, former Mayor Jane Campbell, Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish, former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland and U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan.
