Authorities in the town that's home to Ohio University
are seeking a predator linked to sexual assaults on three women since 2006,
according to the town's police chief.
DNA shows the same person committed the three separate
but similar assaults — one in 2006, one in June 2015 and another in December
2015, Athens Police Chief Tom Pyle said Thursday.
The attacks occurred on young women walking home in the
middle of the night.
The 2006 victim was raped, police said, and the June case
involved an attempted sexual assault. The circumstances of the December
encounter are unclear, but authorities said it was similar to the other two.
The suspect is described as a white male who is about 5
feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, possibly in his late 20s or early 30s,
and weighing about 160 pounds, Fox8.com reported.
Ohio University is working with the city and police to
increase safety measures, University President Roderick McDavis said. These
steps include expanding hours of an on-demand transit service and widening the
service's coverage area to include off-campus housing.
