Essence magazine debuted its first "Black Girl
Magic" issue on Wednesday, which celebrates a class of well-deserving and
hardworking black women who are paving our future.
It is part of the publication's Black History Month
commemoration and comes complete with three separate covers featuring activist
Johnetta "Netta" Elzie and actresses Teyonah Parris and Yara Shadidi.
"Being a part
of this reemergence of a movement both pro-diversity and pro-woman is the best
part of being a black girl," 16-year-old Shahidi told the magazine.
Other trailblazers are also honored alongside these
amazing women as part of Essence's "Class of 2016." They're being
recognized for the great work they've done in their respective fields,
including young women like Bree Newsome, Zendaya, Willow Smith, Aja Naomi King
and Quvenzhane Wallis.
The issue will be available on newsstands everywhere on
Friday, Jan. 8th.
