Man Dies After Drunkenly Hugging Firework on New Year’s Eve

A man died on New Year’s Eve after hugging a firework which exploded and killed him.The man, who was believed to be intoxicated, made the fateful decision while celebrating the New Year in the Philippines.

He has been identified as 45-year-old pedicab driver Ronald Vericio from Santa Manila. The firework reportedly exploded in his arms as he embraced it after it was lit.

Several other people were also injured in the Philippines during New Year celebrations after a stray firework started a vicious fire in the Tondo slum district.

However due to rains late on New Year’s Eve and government adverts informing revellers about firework safety the number of injured was less than half the previous year, according to the country’s Health Secretary Janet Garin.
