£240million Navy Ship Breaks Down After Less Than a Month at Sea

The Milwaukee a £240million state-of-the-art US Navy ship which broke down after less than a month at sea was towed 40 nautical miles to shore following a malfunction caused by metallic debris in the combat ship’s port and starboard combining gear filter systems, reports the Navy Times.

It was headed for San Diego via Mayport, Florida from Halifax, Canada, but it has now been taken to the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek in Virginia for a thorough inspection.
Senator John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, called the break-down ‘deeply alarming.’

‘U.S. Navy ships are built with redundant systems to enable continued operation in the event of an engineering casualty, which makes this incident very concerning,’ he said.

‘I expect the Navy to conduct a thorough investigation into the root causes of this failure, hold individuals accountable as appropriate, and keep the Senate Armed Services Committee informed.’
