Mass protests have been held in Delhi following the
release of a man involved in the gang rape of a medical student.
The man, who was 17 at the time of the rape and cannot be
named, was sentenced to three years in a reform facility in 2013 and finished
his time this weekend.
Protests erupted in the Indian capital following his
release, a release which activists and a number of politicians have said is
premature. Delhi’s high court rejected a petition to extend the sentence
because it was the maximum possible under the law.
‘DCW [Delhi Commission for Women] filing special leave
petition in SC tonight,’ said DCW head Swati Maliwal, who filed the challenge.
