Schools Shut After Parents Fear Homework ‘Indoctrinates Children in Islam’

Authorities in Virginia have closed down schools after a high school geography assignment on Islam led to allegations children were being indoctrinated.

Parents of pupils at Riverheads High in Staunton took exception to a homework assignment which asked the class to try calligraphy by copying a statement in Arabic, the Staunton News Leader reporter.

Consequently August County School District shut several schools and cited the ‘tone and content’ of the correspondence from parents.

‘Following parental objections to the World Geography curriculum and ensuing related media coverage, the school division began receiving voluminous phone calls and electronic mail locally and from outside the area,’ a statement said.

‘As a result of these communications, the Sheriff’s Office and the school division co-ordinated to increase police presence at Augusta County schools and to monitor those communications.’

The piece of text students were asked to copy was the Muslim statement of faith, which reads: ‘There is no god by Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.’
